Spot info

Saunton Sands is a three-and-a-half-mile beach on the North Devon coast, backed along almost its whole length by the dunes of Braunton Burrows, one of the largest sand-dune systems in Britain and the core of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The beach slopes very gently, so the swell arrives as long, slow, peeling waves that are perfect for longboarding and for learning, and Saunton is the classic choice when nearby Croyde is too big or too crowded. Most people use the northern end below the hotel, where the main car park, café and surf hire are; walking south, the beach quickly empties out. At the far southern end the sand meets the joint estuary of the Taw and Torridge, where tidal currents run strongly and swimming is unsafe. Part of the Burrows is used for military training, so obey the signs and red flags. An easterly wind is offshore and a light westerly is still often surfable thanks to the beach's mellow shape. Sea temperatures follow the rest of North Devon, about 16–17 °C at their late-summer peak. There is no Saunton Sands webcam here yet; check the surf forecast and sea temperature below.
