Summerleaze is the town beach of Bude, the main resort on the far north-east coast of Cornwall, sitting where the River Neet and the old Bude Canal reach the sea behind a long stone breakwater. At low tide it becomes a huge expanse of sand that joins up with Crooklets beach to the north, and the swell wraps in to give peaks along the whole stretch; at high tide the beach is much smaller and the waves break closer to the rocks. The Bude Sea Pool, a tidal swimming pool built into the rocks below the cliff in the 1930s, is refilled by every high tide and is a calm alternative when the sea is rough. For surfing, Summerleaze works best with a south-easterly or easterly breeze and a mid-sized west to north-west swell; the outflowing river channel and the breakwater create currents worth respecting. The beach has lifeguards in summer, large car parks and the town's shops and cafés a few steps away. North Cornwall's water warms to about 16–17 °C at the end of summer.
